Frequently Asked Questions

Home » Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is a Renaissance fair?
A Renaissance fair is a themed event that recreates aspects of the Renaissance period, often including historical reenactments, costumed performers, artisan crafts, and medieval-style entertainment. The Festival at the Friar's Gate has a fairy tale theme for the decorations and entertainment.

  • Do I have to wear a costume?
Costumes are encouraged but not required. Many attendees enjoy dressing in period-appropriate attire, but modern clothing is perfectly acceptable. You may want to garb yourself at the fair; many vendors will be offering clothing and accessories to create or complete your look.

  • What kind of entertainment can I expect?
Full entertainment lists are still being finalized. We hope to have all kinds of jousting tournaments, live music, theatrical performances, comedy acts, storytelling, sword fighting demonstrations, and interactive experiences.

  • Are there food and drinks available?
Yes, the Festival will offer a variety of themed foods, such as turkey legs, meat pies, roasted nuts, and ale. You will also find modern food options.

  • Can I bring my own weapons or props?
You are allowed to carry peace-tied (secured) weapons as part of a costume. All weapons (even wood or foam) must be tied with a ribbon or zip tie to prevent them from being drawn. Firearms are not allowed in any capacity.

  • Is the event family-friendly?
Absolutely! The Festival features storytelling, puppet shows, and games. Some shows or performances may have humor intended for mature audiences- check your program before attending

  • Can I bring my pet?
We love animals! But this is a pet-free event due to crowds and working animals on the grounds. The Town of Irmo does not allow dogs in the park during events.  Certified service animals for the disabled are always welcome but we can not allow emotional support pets.

  • What types of vendors will be there?
Vendors will be selling many fun goods, including leatherwork, jewelry, costumes, swords, pottery, and traditional art. Many artisans will demonstrate their craft on-site.

  • Are tickets required?
The Festival at the Friars' Gate is a free event but you must register your party in advance. Parking may have a small fee and will be available in nearby lots with shuttles to bring you to the fair.

  • Do Renaissance fairs happen rain or shine?
We will go on in rain or shine although extreme weather conditions may lead to closures or schedule changes. We will alert patrons via social media, email or text should there be an interruption in service.

  • Are there any rules for photography?
Photography is generally allowed, but always ask for permission before taking close-up shots of patrons, performers or vendors. Some vendors may have restrictions on photographing their goods.

  • Can I pay with credit cards, or do I need cash?
Some vendors accept credit cards, but cash is recommended, as not all locations have reliable card processing. ATMs will be available on-site. Cash is also great for tipping our performers!

  • Is there alcohol available?
We plan to serve alcohol, including mead, beer, and wine. Guests must show ID and follow local drinking laws and remain in the designated drinking areas.

  • Are outside food and drinks allowed?
We do not allow outside food and drinks, except for medical reasons or baby food.  You may bring in a personal bottle of water or two. Remember that feasting at the Festival is a big part of the experience!

  • Can I participate in performances or games?
Yes! We will have interactive performances, games, and contests where attendees can get involved. Check back for more details at a closer date.

  • Is there camping available?
Sadly, no.  We are in a fairly dense residential area with no nearby campgrounds. However there are 12 reasonably priced hotels within 5 miles of the Festival! Watch for discount blocks to be posted a little closer to the event.

  • Is the Festival handicapped-accessible?
Yes!  There is a paved path all the way around the park and two bathroom facilities with handicapped access. We will also have handicapped porta potties available. Limited handicapped parking will be available- book early if you need it.
